Fast answer
The answer before the background
In the stable ruleset, 20 minutes till dawn runes are permanent progression choices split between Sword and Shield paths. They shape the opening before run upgrades appear, while synergies are created during a run by completing compatible upgrade branches. Pierce, bounce, projectile count, on-hit effects, reloads, summons, vision, healing and Soul Hearts are separate mechanics; their value depends on order and on the weapon producing the trigger. The announced beta changes rune and upgrade behavior, so its descriptions must not replace the live stable reference.
System map
Identify what persists and what resets at dawn
| System | Lifetime | What it changes | Verification rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword runes | Permanent account progression on the stable model | Offense, tempo and damage-related starting advantages | Read the installed rune screen; costs and exact values can change. |
| Shield runes | Permanent account progression on the stable model | Defense, recovery, movement or protection | Select for the failure being repaired, not because every defensive rune stacks equally. |
| Run upgrades | Current attempt | Bullet, elemental, summon, reload, health and control branches | The choice disappears with the run; inspect prerequisites before chasing a synergy. |
| Synergy | Current attempt | A combined result unlocked by compatible completed paths | Confirm the current recipe and edition; an old mobile or beta screenshot may not match. |
| Blessings / Curses beta | Announced alternate design | Purchased progression and boss-reward structure are reworked | Do not present the announcement as stable behavior without a public-build check. |
Projectile logic
Order matters when a shot pierces, bounces or triggers an effect
Pierce lets a projectile continue through targets; bounce redirects it after a contact or endpoint according to the current effect. Extra projectile count increases possible contacts but can spread damage away from a boss. On-hit elemental effects benefit from reliable contact frequency, while a slow high-damage shot may prefer multipliers that preserve focused output. Because exact sequencing can be patched, test the interaction with one controlled upgrade change instead of assuming every contact activates every effect at full value.
Vision and Glare-style damage form another distinct engine. Increasing vision can enlarge an effect tied to that radius, but it does not automatically improve a weapon's projectile range or every summon. Healing, maximum health and Soul Hearts likewise need separate labels: restoring red health, increasing the health ceiling and gaining a temporary or special heart are not interchangeable. A Diamond recovery package can reward one of these events while another hero receives only the defensive benefit.
Control settings
Tune mechanics to the actual input device
- On mouse and keyboard, separate movement and directional firing so a retreat does not force shots away from the target.
- On touch, inspect auto-aim and firing assistance in the current mobile menu; assistance can alter which precision weapons feel reliable.
- On controller or Switch, test dead zones and target changes before judging a rapid or return-projectile setup.
- For healing tests, record starting health, maximum health, Soul Hearts and the event that produced recovery.
- For a claimed synergy, capture both prerequisite branches and the resulting choice on the same platform and version.
FAQ
Common questions
Are runes permanent?
On the stable ruleset, purchased Sword and Shield runes are account progression used across runs. Individual level-up upgrades and synergies reset after the attempt.
Can a projectile both pierce and bounce?
A build can acquire both properties, but their order and value depend on the current weapon and effect text. Test the live version rather than relying on an old universal formula.
What is a Soul Heart?
It is a health-related protective resource distinct from ordinary red-health recovery and maximum-health increases. Read the current effect because interactions can be character- and patch-specific.
Does 20 Minutes Till Dawn have auto aim?
Control assistance is most relevant to mobile editions and can vary by build. Steam's core design uses active directional aiming, so check the installed control menu for the exact option.
