The answer before the background

Our recommendation

A useful brotato tier list ranks complete packages for a named goal. For a first clear, consistency and a low number of forced shop choices matter most. For Danger 5, early stability, elite damage, and defense under the character's restrictions receive more weight. Challenge and speed goals can favor higher-ceiling specialists. Character, weapon, and item ranks are therefore separate; combining three S-tier names does not guarantee a coherent build.

Four questions define an editorial tier

ScoreWhat is measuredWhy it matters
Opening stabilityTime until safe, repeatable clearingEarly losses prevent every theoretical late synergy.
Shop flexibilityNumber of common offers that improve the planLow dependence on exact items makes a result repeatable.
Pressure coverageOrdinary waves, elites, bosses, and movementOne spectacular strength can hide a fatal missing role.
Input burdenPrecision, positioning, visual load, and reaction demandA high ceiling can still be a poor beginner recommendation.

S means repeatable for the stated job—not universally strongest

S-tier packages begin functioning early and accept multiple useful paths. A-tier choices are powerful after a clear enabler or demand one manageable trade-off. B-tier specialists can outperform both in the right hands but ask for stricter positioning, rarer combinations, or a particular map. Unranked content includes unreleased, mobile-only, outdated, or insufficiently documented rules that cannot be compared honestly.

Weapon ranks must include the character and shop context. Item ranks must include marginal value, caps, and the remaining waves. A late harvesting item can be excellent in an Endless economy but worthless before Wave 20. A unique item can transform one engine and damage another. Those reversals are why this page does not publish a context-free list of names as objective truth.

Retire a ranking when its assumptions change

  • Record platform, version, owned DLC, mode, and Danger beside every tier table.
  • Recheck characters added by New Dawn, Paws & Claws, and All Pain No Gain against the current client.
  • Do not rank Primal Dread content before the official product is released and playable.
  • Separate consistency from maximum damage and a beginner recommendation from a challenge-run ceiling.
  • Preserve the review date so readers can identify a historically valid but outdated conclusion.

Common questions

What is S tier in Brotato?

For a stated goal, S tier means early stability, flexible shop paths, adequate elite coverage, and a manageable input burden. It is not a promise of the highest possible damage.

Can an item tier list apply to every build?

No. Caps, character modifiers, remaining waves, weapon pattern, and the current failure all change an item's marginal value.

Why are DLC characters separated?

They require different ownership and may introduce mechanics not available in the base pool, so mixing them without a label misleads readers.

Is Primal Dread included?

No live ranking is assigned. The official Steam listing still describes it as an unreleased 2026 product.

What we checked

Official listings establish current availability and product facts. Community pages are used for mechanics and build history, then labeled separately.
