The answer before the background

Our recommendation

Halls of torment abilities are additional attack sources acquired during a run, while traits modify the hero, main weapon or eligible abilities. The community reference says normal runs can hold up to six abilities and that upgrade offers are tied to ability-trait milestones. Before selecting Force, Multistrike, direct-damage or effect-damage bonuses, open the source details and confirm that the statistic actually applies to its projectile, summon, duration, movement or status behavior.

An ability, its traits and its upgrades form one progression line

Tomes or Scrolls of Mastery provide ability choices in the original structure. The community ability index documents default map sources and elite drops, but stage and artifact behavior can change. Unlocking an ability through a quest adds it to future availability; it does not guarantee that every run offers it immediately.

Plan the important trait ranks before expecting an upgrade. The reference describes upgrade offers after specific rank milestones, with special cases such as Sage or signet interactions. If a guide says an upgrade appears at any level, compare that claim with the current card, quest state and mark. Pool size also matters: unlocking many options expands variety but can reduce the chance of seeing one exact plan.

Ask what physical behavior the number changes

Stat familyUsually asks aboutCheck before taking it
ForceKnockback, duration or movement-related behaviorThe source must expose an effect that Force can change.
MultistrikeAdditional attacks or projectilesThe ability's cap and spawn pattern can limit visible value.
Direct damageA hit delivered by a weapon or abilityDo not count later burn, frost, decay or other effect ticks as the same source.
Effect damageDamage applied by a statusChance, stack behavior and duration can matter more than one bonus.
Block and defenseDifferent mitigation layersRead the hero and item formulas for the current version.

Compare jobs before comparing damage totals

Flame Strike, Kugelblitz, Lightning Strike, Radiant Aura, Ring Blades, Sentinel Orb and other named sources cover different areas and delivery patterns. A damage meter without stage, duration and enemy density can make an ability look strong because it cleared harmless crowds while another source handled the Lord. Define the job first.

Patch notes can change a source directly. Official 2025 and 2026 updates adjusted Boglands abilities, Bard interactions, performance behavior and damage calculations. Preserve the date of an exact number. Stable guidance explains tags, trait paths and positioning; volatile guidance lists current values and must be rechecked after every balance patch.

Common questions

When can I upgrade an ability?

Upgrade offers depend on the relevant ability-trait rank milestones and any special mark or signet rules in the current version.

What does Force do?

It changes eligible behaviors such as knockback, lifetime or movement-related effects; it is not a universal damage multiplier.

What is the difference between direct and effect damage?

Direct damage comes from the hit itself, while effect damage belongs to applied statuses such as burn or Decay under their own rules.

Is Multistrike always good?

No. It must create useful additional attacks for the source, and practical caps, coverage and other multipliers can change its value.
