The answer before the background

Our recommendation

God of weapons items turn limited inventory space into stats, adjacency effects, set bonuses and special rules. Judge an item by the problem it solves, the squares it consumes and the weapons its effect can actually reach. Armory testing can verify behavior, while Favor and Banish change future shop access. Consumables trade immediate effects, permanent run changes or risk; read the current tooltip before using one.

Price every square, edge and future placement

An item with a positive stat can still be a poor purchase when it blocks the only location for a major adjacency piece. Sketch the intended weapon cluster, mark which squares must touch, and keep awkward corners for small fillers. Inventory expansion is strongest when it creates usable rectangles or new edges, not merely a larger number.

Set bonuses reward related tags, but a maximum set is not free. Count the Gold, shapes and weaker pieces required to reach it. If the last set member forces out a high-impact unique item, compare the complete layouts rather than assuming the label is always worth finishing.

Favor and Banish refine a plan; they do not write it

The 2025 base update added a Favour/Banish system and an Armory training dummy. Favor an item or weapon that appears in several viable versions of the build. Banish a true dead roll whose tags and scaling cannot contribute. Removing every alternative can make a run brittle when the planned unique piece never appears.

Use the Armory to compare isolated functionality and to check whether a special trigger works. Then validate on a real floor where movement and enemy density matter. Record version and exact tooltip for items such as Bloody Teeth, Fate's Favor or Banner of Heaven because named effects and bugs can change in patches.

Common questions

What items are best?

The best item solves the current damage, survival, economy or geometry problem and can physically support the chosen weapons.

How does Banish work?

It removes an option from future consideration under the current system; use it on true non-fits after defining the build.

What is the Armory for?

It is the game's equipment reference and, after the free update, includes a training dummy for controlled functionality checks.

Should I use every consumable?

No. Read its permanent effect, immediate benefit and penalty; some trade future pressure for current power.
