Fast answer
The answer before the background
A rogue tower university works only beside an Occult Shrine. Gold invested into its health, armor or shield research creates a percentage chance for a global multiplier increase at the start of waves. Other support buildings have different terrain and resource gates: Mana Siphons need crystals, Mines need iron veins, Haunted Houses use grave-related economy, and Mana Banks trade a large Gold cost for portable mana capacity and generation.
Building ledger
Each support building has an input, a site and a payoff
| Building | Required condition | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Mana Siphon | Adjacent compatible Mana Crystal | Cheap local generation versus scarce placement. |
| Mine | Adjacent Iron Vein | Tower durability and economy chain versus immediate damage. |
| Haunted House | Current grave / tower-health economy rule | Only build when the interaction can repay its cost. |
| Mana Bank | No special tile | Flexible mana at a high Gold price. |
| University | Adjacent Occult Shrine | Global research chance with late-run scaling. |
University
Research is probability, not an instant damage purchase
Community documentation describes separate Health, Armor and Shield research chances. Gold increases those chances, and each University rolls at wave boundaries. Focusing one layer produces a more predictable answer to a known gap; spreading across all three creates wider but lower individual odds. Choose based on the damage tracker and remaining waves.
Occult Shrines appear as map features later in a run, so a University cannot rescue an opening that never stabilized. Count the Gold needed to construct, fund and protect the scaling window. Endless reduces University research odds over time according to the official update, which makes early efficient investment more important without making every University purchase correct.
Opportunity cost
An economy building must beat the defense it delayed
Mana Banks and Siphons are valuable only when the towers consuming mana convert it into useful damage or control. Excess capacity with no spender is dead capital; too many spenders without regeneration cause intermittent attacks. Observe the mana bar through a full dense wave before expanding either side.
Haunted House and Mine details changed historically, and some wiki text preserves old behavior beside newer notes. Treat the current tooltip and installed version as primary for formulas. Use community pages to identify the system, then test one building and compare Gold, mana, tower health or research gained against the wave pressure it postponed.
FAQ
Common questions
How do Universities work?
Build beside an Occult Shrine, fund a damage-layer research chance, and let it roll for global bonuses at wave starts.
Why can I not place a University?
It requires valid placement beside an Occult Shrine and enough Gold.
Mana Siphon or Mana Bank?
Siphons are terrain-gated and cheaper; Banks are flexible but expensive. Choose against consumption and placement.
Are Haunted House formulas stable?
Community pages preserve version changes, so verify the live tooltip and current patch before using an exact formula.
