Layers
Health, armor and shield are separate damage assignments
An enemy can carry more than one layer. Damage aimed at health is inefficient while substantial shield or armor remains, so route order matters: the shield answer usually needs earlier contact, armor pressure follows, and health finishers need enough remaining path. Target priority can keep a specialist on the layer it was built to remove.
Bleed, burn and poison add time-dependent pressure. A damage-over-time effect needs route length and living targets long enough to tick; a late application beside the core may report impressive potential without preventing the leak. Compare damage tracker results with where the damage occurred, not only the final total.
Upgrade choice
Level the placed network before buying a decorative roster
Towers gain experience and can be improved during a run, while cards change global or tower-specific behavior. Count how many placed towers benefit from a card. A modest Ballista improvement affecting a large established network can beat a dramatic card for one expensive tower that has poor coverage.
Community tables are useful for names and structural comparisons, but several updates changed base numbers and effects. Check the current tooltip, record the selected cards and avoid mixing April Fools values with the normal branch. What is the best tower?

What is good against shield?
Use a tower and card package whose current tooltip favors shield damage, positioned early enough to remove it before armor and health stages.
Why does a high-damage tower still leak?
It may hit the wrong layer, have poor target priority, apply damage too late or lack route coverage.
Are wiki numbers always current?
